Cardiovascular disease (also called as CVD) is still the number one killer on the planet today. More than 18.6 million people die from heart-related diseases every year --- much more than death from HIV, malaria and cancer. It can be caused by smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, to rare and neglected conditions.


Many people are not aware of it until they find themselves in hospital with a heart attack or stroke for first time. Along with further study, people find that not only what causes high blood pressure, overweight and high cholesterol are all similar, but what helps reduce them. To conclude, people need to watch their eating habits and be more physically active to prevent themselves from those symptoms that can develop into CVD. The British Heart Foundation gives healthier swaps, where they suggest alternatives, such as choosing low fat ingredients and skimmed dairy products.

Other activities are also helpful as long as they promote increasing breathing and getting the heart to beat faster during training and exercise (of course you want to consult a doctor before doing any of these things). Eventually, people can ‘have a go’ at moderate or even high intensity training and exercise (Payne and Huins 2018).  

Studies also show that 150 minutes of exercise per week (about 20-30 minutes per day) can make a great difference in the long term – the risk of heart and circulatory diseases can be reduced by 35%!

As National Institute of Health (2011) suggests, prolonged sitting is common today and compared with other modifiable health behaviors, whereas the potential health risks of this common behavior result in obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. Unsurprisingly, an OPACH study in 2019(Objective Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health) found long-time sitting is a major risk factor contributes to heart disease, each extra hour of sedentary time to 8 hours per day was associated with 12% increase in multivariable-adjusted risk for CVD.
